City of London Investment Trust (CTY) – AGM Report 2015

I'll start by repeating what I said about this company in 2012: I have held this general investment trust a very long time - about as long as the fund manager, Job Curtis, has been managing the fund in fact. In other words a very long time, so it was interesting to attend their Annual General Meeting (AGM) yesterday as I don’t always bother. It’s hardly a company where one expects many complaints or surprises at the AGM for reasons that ...

Goodwin (GDWN) AGM Report 2015

Goodwin (GDWN), a family controlled mechanical engineering and refractory business based in Stoke, must be one of the closest British equivalents of the famed ‘mittelstand’ companies which have driven Germany’s economic success in recent years. Founded in 1883, it is run by the sixth generation of the founding family and boasts long-term shareholder returns that few companies can match. Although Goodwin’s share price has nearly halved since its peak of £41.75 last year, primarily due to almost half its revenues being oil ...

Diageo (DGE) AGM Report 2015

Diageo Plc held their Annual General Meeting at the Mermaid Conference Centre in London on the 23rd September. One wonders if Diageo had been listening too much to its own hype on its environmental / social and third world economic policies, as the 300 plus shareholders present were treated to a video while we were waiting for the AGM to start talking up Diageo’s charitable works, but nothing of any financial content. This was to set the tone for the rest ...

Polar Capital Technology Trust (PCT) AGM Report 2015

I attended the Polar Capital Technology Trust (PCT) Annual General Meeting at the Royal Automobile Club yesterday. The time of 2.30 pm was apparently set because not all directors could make a morning meeting on that day. I chatted to the Chairman, Michael Moule, before the meeting started but only later realised that he was one of our Members. It seems he is another of those wise investors who have an ISA with a very large valuation - partly because he has ...

Berkeley Group (BKG) AGM Report – Plus ca change

I attended the Berkeley Group (BKG) Annual General Meeting this morning in deepest Surrey - no complaints this year about the location which somewhat surprised me. There was a good turn-out at about 30 shareholders even so. Some background first: This is of course a housebuilding company and like others in the sector has been doing well of late. But it gives the impression in terms of share price movements that investors might be getting nervous about the housing market. As the ...

Rensburg AIM VCT (RSB) AGM Report 2015

I attended the Annual General Meeting of Rensburg AIM VCT in Leeds on the 25th August. To remind readers this company has been the focus of a long running campaign by ShareSoc (since October 2011 in fact - see www.sharesoc.org/campaigns.html for the complete history). I argued that they should change the focus from being an AIM VCT to a generalist one and tackle other major issues. Although investment performance subsequently improved, and the AIM market improvement helped, they made few new ...

Blinkx Plc (RTHM) AGM Report 2015

Blinkx Plc held their annual general meeting today in the City at 9.30am. The timing was moved back from the previous year’s 9.00am start after complaints, but is still in my view to early (no seat on train etc). 25 shareholders were present, down from the 40 that attended last year, although that year was probably high due to the Edelman blog, attack by shorters and the subsequent fall in share price. The share price this year has not fared much ...

B.P. Marsh (BPM) AGM Report 2015

A brief report. I went to the AGM on 22 July and suspect that I was the only 'outsider' although they made me very welcome. There was no trading statement but Brian Marsh was very happy to take specific questions which were farmed out to the various directors responsible. I queried some of the positive valuations in the annual report given that some of the investee companies are showing a loss and/or negative capital. In some cases they have the benefit ...

BT Group plc (BT.A) AGM 2015

AGM held at 11 am on 15th July 2015 at 1 Old Billingsgate, London and was closed at 1 pm for lunch. Share price £4.65 – a FTSE 100 company with a £39bn market cap. There were approx. 1,000 attendees. Sir Michael Rake, Chairman of BT opened the meeting. Chief Executive Gavin Patterson made a presentation on BT’s progress. BT has four core services: Fixed Line, Broadband, TV (TV anywhere, Netflix, AMC American Channel) & Mobile (buying EE). Content is being driven by BT Sport ...

Telecom Plus (TEP) AGM Report 2015 – Creative Accounting and Pay Issues

Telecom Plus which trades as "The Utility Warehouse" held its AGM today (11th August 2015). The company provides a complete range of utility services - gas, electricity, broadband, fixed line and mobile phones via a "club" concept promoted by a network of self-employed (mainly part-time) distributors. They offer competitive pricing and an efficient operation (I am one of their customers) although some of the newer entrants in the gas/electricity sector may be cheaper at this moment. But that may not last ...
