Scottish Financial News, 13 October 2026, ShareSoc says investors aren’t ‘apathetic’, they’re ‘invisible’, as Saba vote looms

As Baillie Gifford US Growth Trust warns that low turnout could hand Saba the board, ShareSoc says the real problem isn’t apathy but invisibility.

ShareSoc, which represents more than 9,500 private investors, said the problem is more complex, explaining that shareholders don’t know they can vote, companies can’t contact them and the voting tools are “primitive”.

ShareSoc said platforms and nominees have inserted themselves between companies and their shareholders. Shareholders may not vote because they didn’t know they could, because listed companies don’t know who their shareholders actually are, or because the voting functionality is “primitive, limited and completely uninformative”.

ShareSoc added that digitisation may go some way to addressing the problem, and its chair, Heather Benjamin, sits on the taskforce working on it.
