VCTs: An essential part of your investment portfolio
28 March 2023

Date: 28th March 2023
Time
: 1pm – 2pm
Format: Webinar
Presenters:  Jonathan Davis (Editor of the Investment Trusts Handbook), Nick Bird (Head of Strategic Growth, Octopus),  Nick Britton (Head of Intermediary Communications, AIC) and Richard Roth (ShareSoc member and VCT expert)

Event description:
Recent volatility in public markets has driven greater diversification in the portfolios of private investors, with VCTs being one of the beneficiaries of this. Exposure to privately held companies in the earlier stages of their development and the tax breaks that come with it have proven to be an attractive option to investors, but VCTs may not be suitable for everyone. In this webinar we will hear from VCTs and VCT experts on the pros and cons of including VCTs in your portfolio

Presenters bios:
Jonathan Davis
is one of the UK’s leading writers on investment. A professionally qualified investor, he is the author of numerous books about investment, has written regular columns for the Financial Times and The Spectator, podcasts for Master Investor and is an adviser to investment companies.

Nick Bird: Nick is Head of Strategic Growth at Octopus. He has worked in financial services for 25 years with the last 10  at Octopus. Over that time Nick has worked closely with advisers to help grow their business by understanding their clients, working with professional connections and providing planning ideas and training. Nick is an affiliate of STEP and specialises in estate planning work. He is a regular contributor to the trade press and speaks passionately about the power of good planning and the opportunities of smaller company investing.

Nick Britton: A former financial and business journalist, Nick joined the Association of Investment Companies (AIC) in 2015. He works mainly with financial advisers and wealth managers, supporting their use of investment companies and VCTs. This includes delivering the AIC’s training programme for financial advisers as well as working with the media and professional organisations, such as the CII and CISI, to further wider knowledge and understanding of the investment company structure.

Richard Roth: Richard is a well-informed and experienced VCT investor, having followed the industry closely since inception and has an extensive understanding of the sector having observed good and bad practice for over 20 years.
He also sits on the other side of the fence: for the last 8 years he has been a director on 5 VCTs. He is the chairman of Oxford Technology 2 VCT, where last year he managed the merger of the 4 Oxford Technology VCTs. Five years ago, as a director of self-managed Hygea vct (now renamed Seneca Growth Capital VCT), he facilitated the introduction of a manager new to the VCT world: Seneca now manage a B share pool, having raised nearly £20m in new subscriptions.
He has been involved in recent ShareSoc campaigns seeking to improve governance at VCTs.
Richard is a Chartered Management Accountant, and has been deeply involved in growing and/or turning businesses around. He has invested in a number of small (mainly unquoted) companies and has also advised several potential start-up businesses – mainly travel-related.
