Sound Energy plc (SOU)

Sound Energy is a compelling transition energy investment opportunity, listed on the UK AIM market of the London Stock Exchange, with operations in Morocco centred around onshore exploration, development and production of gas. Gas is the focal transition fuel and critical to the country’s energy policy to move to sustainable local renewable energy away from imported coal and hydrocarbon fuels. The company has a 25 year development concession with a Micro – LNG development underway at Tendrara, the first major onshore gas resource in Morocco, and a funded piped gas project due for FID this year. Small scale LNG will supply the industrial market, the piped gas development is for the power sector. Exploration wells are funded to support the infrastructure led exploration potential. Together these give the company significant opportunities for scalable growth on its 28,000 square km of onshore permits.

Sound Energy therefore plays a pivotal role in responding to rising energy demand in Morocco and is facilitating the energy transition. This is further enhanced by Sound’s recent early-stage diversification into opportunities in renewable power generation and Hydrogen exploration in Morocco. Sound has strong stakeholder engagement and partnerships with leading Moroccan companies, thereby leveraging in country expertise in renewable energy projects and its funded gas developments. Financially, the company is focused on revenue targets from Phase 1 LNG production this year, judicious investment, prudent cost management and balance sheet deleveraging to fund asset development opportunities. A well supported financial structure and clear strategic focus make Sound Energy poised to deliver further growth potential from its access to Moroccan gas and energy markets.

Oxford Technology Management

Since 1983 Oxford Technology (OT) has been investing in science start-ups.  In 2012 the SEIS scheme was which offers investors very generous tax reliefs (including a 50% return in cash in year 1 against income tax and all gains tax free).  So, OT has been making SEIS and EIS investments in science start-ups since then.  The maths says it should work and so far, it has.  The one big negative are that the investments are illiquid and cash only comes back to investors when there are exits.

Recently OT has introduced the OTKI (Oxford Technology Knowledge Intensive) funds.  These funds will close every quarter. The first closed on 4 April 2025, the second on 30 Jun 25.  The next will close on 30 Sept 25.  Investors in these will receive 5 EIS investments selected from the existing OT portfolio.  The investees which will be those which are now substantially de-risked, and which are growing and meeting their plans.  Investors can claim all the tax reliefs with a single form (EIS5) thus greatly reducing the paperwork in claiming the tax relief.

Presenter: Lucius Cary – Founder and CEO
Lucius raised his first science and technology seed fund in 1983, after founding and exiting his first business.  He has been investing in science startups ever since. He has a degree in Economics and Engineering from Oxford and an MBA from Harvard Business School. In 2003 he was awarded an OBE for services to business.
