Whitbread (WTB) AGM Report 2016 – More Fun Than Lloyds?

The Whitbread Annual General Meeting took place at Church House Conference Centre in Westminster on the 22nd June. This is a good venue although some objected to the 2.0 pm start time, but others liked it. There were about 100 shareholders present. As the Chairman said, a later start time does enable people to travel from some distance. Some background first: Whitbread now has three main business strands: Premier Inn budget hotels, restaurants (Beefeater, Brewers Fayre, etc), and the Costa coffee shops. ...

Synairgen (SNG) AGM 2016

I attended the Synairgen AGM earlier this week (Tuesday June 14th) which was held at the offices of Fladgate LLP, 16 Great Queen Street, London. For anyone who is unfamiliar with the company, Synairgen are an AIM listed UK based biotech focused on developing new treatments for Asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases. Their current market cap is around £26M. Synairgen currently have one compound undergoing a confirmatory Phase II clinical study in asthma (funded entirely by Astra Zeneca) and a second ...

Soco International (SIA) AGM 2016

SOCO International is an oil exploration and production company. It currently produces around 10,000 bpd from its assets in Vietnam, and has a portfolio of fields in development in Africa. The AGM was held in the downstairs cinema of the Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. The hotel is very “designer”: all chrome and black. The cinema had black leather seats, black drapes with accessories in dark wood. In one word the surroundings were opulent. If this was meant to impress it had precisely ...

Hurricane Energy (HUR) AGM 2016

Hurricane Energy (HUR) is an oil Exploration and Production (E&P) company specialising in fractured basement plays, with acreage in development in the North Sea. The AGM was held in a conference room at the Royal Society of Chemistry in Piccadilly, London. There were 25-30 attendees including some small shareholders, many of whom were long term investors. Management mingled with attendees both before and after the event, and were happy to answer questions. However, as the company is in the process of developing ...

WPP (WPP) AGM 2016

I got up at 5.15am and a car from the BBC arrived at 5.45 to drive me to the BBC studio to talk on the Radio 4 Today program in their 7.15 business slot. Then it was off to Bloomberg to do a TV interview at 8.45. I mainly repeated the comments in the ShareSoc Press Release on WPP here: https://www.sharesoc.org/pr79-wpp-remuneration.html The WPP AGM started at 12.00 and I attended along with about 500 shareholders and others. The performance for the first 4 ...

Arrow Global (ARW) AGM 2016

Manchester Town Hall had seemed a rather big venue for the annual general meeting of Arrow Global, a little-known purchaser of non-performing consumer loans (NPLs). In the event the AGM was held in the slightly less grand Lord Mayor’s Parlour. Apart from a few Arrow employees, I appeared to be the only shareholder present, and the only one asking questions. Arrow, a £470m market cap company floated on the main market at 205p a share in October 2013, is a conundrum. Since ...

NAHL Group (NAH) AGM 2016

I attended NAHL's AGM, held at 10:00am on 25th May, at the Kettering Park Hotel. Given unpredictable M1 traffic, I set off early, with the intention of getting breakfast at the hotel, if I arrived in good time. This turned out to be a big mistake. I got there at 09:15, finding that they were already closing the dining room at that time, so was relegated to the bar, where I could still order - one of the most expensive cups ...

Judges Scientific Plc (JDG) AGM Report 2016

Today I attended the 13th Annual general Meeting of Judges Scientific at the Lansdowne Club in the West End of London. Judges Scientific Plc is a company that is engaged in the acquisition and development of a portfolio of scientific instrument businesses. 5 shareholders were present today, which is 4 more than last year – maybe todays profit warning encouraged a higher than usual turnout. The profit warning contained the following: "At the time of the release of the 2015 annual results on ...

Ranger Direct Lending Fund (RDL) AGM 2016

RDL is my largest equity holding, hence attending the AGM on 24th May was important to me. It is a specialist UK registered and listed investment trust that is managed from Texas, investing primarily in loans made on "alternative lending platforms", mainly to US SME borrowers. I had a number of questions that I wished to clarify with the company. The AGM was held in the afternoon, at the offices of RDL's legal advisers, Travers Smith. Only two other shareholders were ...

Report on Keller (KLR) AGM 2016

I attended Keller Group Plc's AGM, held at 11am today, at the City offices of Investec. All directors and the new chairman were present. Approximately 5 private investors attended. Proceedings began with introductions by retiring chairman, Roy Franklin. There was no presentation and the Chair moved quickly to the formal business (with voting to be conducted by poll), preceded by questions. NB notes below are paraphrased, based on my notes/interpretation and are not verbatim. My comments in italics. To kick things off, I asked ...
